Job Readiness of Students in Today's Competitive World

Town and Hamden Board of Education Develop New Collaboration

For Job Readiness of Students in Today’s Competitive World

As the economy evolves, the Town of Hamden must prepare its young people for a job market that offers many opportunities. Students and parents should have the knowledge of and have access to post High School opportunities for all forms of training including from a four year college or other vocational training.

“The most important issue facing business today is a well prepared, qualified workforce. The key industries in Hamden and in the region provide jobs in health care, construction, home repairs, light manufacturing and technology. These jobs require not only skills provided through a strong public education system, but also skills that can be learned outside of a four year college. We want to share opportunities about the local and regional economy and how that translates to making a livable wage.” stated Dale Kroop, Director of Economic Development and Neighborhood Revitalization.

The idea for this collaboration grew out of Mr. Kroops' participation as Co-Chair of the Workforce and Housing subcommittee for the (regional) Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). It is very important to the Town’s future to retain our talented young people. They will be the business leaders of tomorrow and will be part of the civic infrastructure of the Town of Hamden and the greater New Haven region.

“Hamden’s youth are the core of our future as a town. It is our responsibility as municipal and community leaders to ensure that the path to a successful career is available for every child, teen, and young adult in our communities. This program will connect our youth directly to our local businesses and tradesmen, providing valuable life lessons and opportunities to our students. I commend Mr. Kroop and the BOE on their efforts to begin this program, and I look forward to the many benefits it will bring in the months and years ahead.”

The Board of Education has been very active in providing important information to parents and students about the job market.  Dan Cocchiola is the Coordinator of Counseling and Career Pathways and is the Director of this project and will be working with Mr. Kroop to implement this partnership.

“Hamden Public Schools is very excited about the prospects of this collaboration.  Our STEM and CTE program offerings link closely with the workforce needs of our community, and we have begun to establish pathways to certifications in a variety of fields.  In partnership with the town, local colleges, and business associations we see ourselves building capacity to directly link 21st century ready graduates into the workforce, with a focus on careers in technology, manufacturing and health care”, stated Mr. Cocchiola.

Through this collaboration, the Town and the Board of Education will bring in business owners and speakers from different industries to share career opportunities and information concerning the skills required for meeting the demand of business and industry. This information will be presented directly in the community to parents and students so that funding can be prioritized for these programs and so that parents can plan these educational goals for their children. “The High School and Middle School are on the right track with their STEM and technology educational opportunities, and we want to help to bring the market to the education system. For students who have different skills sets or interests, we also want to share the great opportunities that are found in general health care, manufacturing  and the traditional trades such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC and welding. These areas offer great opportunities for employment, often immediately after receiving appropriate training” concluded Mr. Kroop.

This initiative continues other partnerships between the Town, the Board of Education and the private marketplace. Since 2016, the Board of Education has collaborated with the Town and with the Residential Real Estate agents to better inform potential buyers about the great programs in the Hamden Middle School and Hamden High School. This has led to a successful effort to inform potential buyers of homes that Hamden offers a quality education with many unique opportunities for career advancement.
