Everyone Gets a Job: Exploring Career and Technical Educational Opportunities

Health Care Panelists Announced

On Thursday January 24th at 630 pm in the Senior Center at the Miller Library, the Town will host its first panel on Health Care careers for parents and students. The panelists will talk about educational requirements, the job market and the earning potential in the health care marketplace. Health Care is the fastest growing part of the Hamden and regional economy so come and hear what different parts of this sector have to say.

Speakers include:

For Careers in Radiology: Michele Pepe is a senior manager at Yale New Haven Hospital in the radiology department. She received her degree from Quinnipiac College. Michele has been at Yale New Haven Hospital for 21 years where is started off as a Nuclear Medicine technologist and after five years was promoted to a chief technologist and continued on her career pathway to manager. She oversees patient and family satisfaction in the radiology department and chairs the Patient and Family Forum for radiology. She can be contacted at michele.pepe@ynhh.org.

For Careers in Home Healthcare: Janine Martino opened Home Health Specialty Services. Inc. in 2014. She has her degree from Southern CT. State University and worked in the medical supply industry for many years.

She opened Home Health Specialty Services. Inc. with around 8 or 9 employees and now has 50 full and part time employees. She opened the agency because she saw a large need to provide quality home care services for seniors and those with illness disabilities but wanting to stay at home. 

Home Health Specialty Services provides specialties in the areas of Cardiac Care, COPD Care, Orthopedic Care, Diabetic Care, Wound Care and Behavioral Health. The employees of Home Health Specialty Services. Inc. includes This includes nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, medical  social workers, home health aides (CNA’s) and office staff.

For Careers in Public Health: Leslie A. Balch is the Director of Health for the Quinnipiack Valley Health District (QVHD), a four-town local public health agency serving approximately 99,000 residents in Bethany, Hamden, North Haven and Woodbridge.

Leslie has been in the health field for over 47 years, 31 of which have been in local public health in Connecticut. She held various clinical, teaching and administrative positions as a registered nurse before entering the public health field as a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica 38 years ago. Since then, she has been with the CT State Department of Public Health as a MCH program consultant and served as the Director of Health for West Haven, CT before moving to QVHD in 1991.

QVHD is one of six local health departments having received funding from the CT Department of Public Health to work with Yale New Haven Hospital’s emergency department staff on The Connecticut Opioid Response (CoRE) Initiative and has been on the forefront of harm reduction, medicated assisted provider education, and community awareness of substance use disorder as a chronic disease.

Leslie's educational background includes a BS in nursing from St. Mary of the Plains College in Kansas; a MS in community health education from Southern CT State University; and a MPH in health services administration from Yale University

For Careers in Senior Care and Lifestyle: Since 2005, Michael Rambarose has served residents and staff of Whitney Center, a Hamden, Connecticut not-for-profit senior living community founded in 1979 comprising independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing amenities and services with annual budgeted revenues of approximately $27 million and a workforce of 280+ people. 

Throughout his nearly 20 years in the aging services field, Mike has served senior living and healthcare communities of New York and Connecticut in myriad capacities, including community education & outreach, marketing & public relations, business development, operations management and executive leadership.  Mike is keenly interested in helping advance the aging services field for the betterment of elders and those who serve them.  Mike is a regular speaker at regional and national conferences focusing on aging services and leadership. 

Mike’s education includes a BS from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and an Executive MBA from Pace University.  He is a proud U.S. Navy veteran and coaches youth football and youth wrestling in Portland, CT where he resides with his wife (Anita) and four sons (Mason, Austin, Ashton & Michael).
