Session One of Micro-Enterprise Series


Less than Two Weeks to go before the Start of the first Small Business Series at BOROUGH496 for Start- ups and new Businesses.
Each Session will be located in the BOROUGH496 Training Room at 496 Newhall Street in Hamden. Seating is limited to 25 people. Time to sign up by contacting Dale Kroop at dkroop@hamden.com or call 203-287-7033.
The Business Mentor Richard Pearce will conduct this series. Come and learn the basics of starting and succeeding in business. All sessions are from 6:30pm -8:00pm.
Session One: Monday February 10th: So you want to be an entrepreneur?”
  • What is an entrepreneur? What are the common characteristics of entrepreneurs?
  • Common mistakes made by would be entrepreneurs. The most common mistake is to rush into business without careful thought and discussion of how their business goals will involve and affect their family, significant other, or their support group. We will explore why this happens and how to manage it.
  • The importance of preparing a “family plan” prior to preparation of a business plan. What may be the implications of starting a business on one’s lifestyle?
  • Components of a “Family Plan” and why they are important.


Session Two: Tuesday February 18: Starting and Growing your business
  • Form of Business: Sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, corporation and other forms will be discussed for their pros and cons.
  • Options for Business Ownership:
  • Start from the beginning
  • Buy an existing business
  • Purchasing a franchise
  • Creating a The Business Plan: Introduction will expose participants to typical topics that should be covered in a business plan.
Session Three: Monday February 24th: The Business Plan in detail
Detailed guidance to writing an acceptable business plan. Participants. Numerous topics regarding the writing of their business plans will be covered.
Session Four: Monday March 2nd: Financing your business
  • Personal resources (i.e. “skin in the game”)
  • Family and friends
  • Business partners
  • Investors
  • Banks
  • Alternative lenders
  • Venture capitalist
  • Grant funding (the myths and the reality)
