The Town of Hamden Offers Small Business Seminar Series at the Miller Library



As part of the reopening of the Hamden Business and Career Center at the Miller Library which will be held in November of 2015, the Hamden Economic and Community Development Department through its’ Business Assistance Center, in partnership with the Hamden Public  Library will offer a four part series on various topics for business owners and people who are considering starting or expanding a business. The program will be open to Hamden residents and Hamden business owners.

The program will include the following topics and dates.

Seminar One:   Wednesday 10/7/15

  • Choosing your business structure: Discussion of options such as Sole Proprietor, Limited Liability Corporation, General Partnerships, S or C Corporations etc.

The definitions, advantages and disadvantages of each business type will be explored and discussed.

Speaker will be Attorney Erskine McIntosh - The Law Offices of Erskine D. McIntosh

  • Identifying the right business opportunity for yourself  

Examples of Topics

     •  Products or services

     •  Starting from scratch

     •  Buying an existing business

     •  Purchase a franchise 

We will discuss factors that influence your decisions such as your skill sets, passions, and experience and the potential rewards of each type of opportunity.

Speakers will be Attorney McIntosh and Richard Pearce –Hamden Business Assistance Center/ Evolution Enterprises

Seminar Two: Wednesday 10/14/15

  • Managing your business  

     •  Organizational policies and procedures (organizational chart, job descriptions)

     •  Management information systems (Quick Books, bookkeeping, financial reporting, data base management, etc.) 

Speakers will be David Scaramozza, CPA and Nancy Hayes, CPA – Carter & Hayes & Associates P.C. 

  • Financing your business

We will discuss Banks, Alternative lenders and State\Federal programs, Investors, Family and Friends.

Speakers will be Sandy Webber & Brian Charlebois  – Bankwell Financial Services; Jose Lopez – People’s United Bank; James Bzdyra – Community Economic Development Fund;  and  Sheila Hummel – CT Department of Economic and Community Development.

Seminar Three: Wednesday 10/21/15

  • The Business Plan

Topics Include:

     •  Purpose for writing a business plan

     •  Components of a business plan

     •  How to construct financial projections

  • Personal Plan As it relates to business formation

A detailed discussion about what each component of a business plan should contain. A business plan outline, constructed by CTCIC and CSBDC, will be provided.

Speaker for both sessions will be Richard Pearce - Hamden Business Assistance Center/Evolution Enterprises

Seminar Four: Wednesday 10/28/15

  • Insuring your business

a)         Common business insurances purposes and types.

b)         Other insurance considerations

c)         Bonding

Speaker will be Vincent Falcigno – The Falcigno Group

  • Marketing your business

Topics will include:

     •  Social Media as a business tool

     •  Networking

     •  Website

     •  Image making 

Speaker will be Marjorie Clark – Little Fish

  • Maximizing the value of your business  

Topics to include:

     •  Internal growth

     •  Acquisition

     •  Merger

     •  Sale 

Speaker will be Richard Pearce - Hamden Business Assistance Center/Evolution Enterprises

Each session shall span two hours (6:00PM – 8:00PM). Attendees are encouraged to attend all sessions which shall be held in the Friends Room  at the Miller Library located at 2901 Dixwell Avenue Hamden CT 06518.

These sessions are free to Hamden residents. Participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items to the sessions or to make a contribution the Hamden Food Bank.
