Application Process Announced for Zero Energy House


The Hamden Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) is pleased to announce that it will now accept applications for the lottery for potential buyers of the Zero Energy House, located at 499 Newhall Street in Hamden CT. “We look forward to completing the construction of the house and finding a new family to move in. Unfortunately there is but one house but it’s a start,” stated Dale Kroop Executive Director of the Hamden Economic Development Corporation.

 The Zero Energy house will include a 1800 SF single family home with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. It will also include an attached garage with a 600+ S.F. in-laws apartment. The home is considered a Zero Energy house because of the many energy efficiency features. There will be little expense for heating and electricity. Some of these energy features will include significant insulation throughout the walls and ceilings, etc., triple glazed windows and energy efficient appliances. 

 HEDC will accept applications (click here for an application) for eligible homeowners until 4:30 PM on Thursday September 15th, 2016. The cost of the home will be approximately $175,000. Down payment assistance may be available. There will be a restriction on the amount of rent that can be charged for the 600 SF 1 BR/ 1Bath apartment will be $410 per month. The qualifications are regulated by the low income housing tax credit program at CHFA.

 The criteria* for applicants includes:

  • Applicants must be first time homebuyers
  • Applicants must be prequalified by a credible lender
  • Applicants must complete a homebuyer education class arranged by HEDC
  • Applicants must be income qualified

Note: *All four criteria must be met before being considered for the lottery.
